National Digital Newspaper Program
The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) is a joint effort between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress. This is a long term endeavor aimed at creating a nationwide online digital database for newspapers published between 1836 and 1922.
Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records received the 2 year grant in 2008 which was renewed in 2010. We are proud to contribute 100,000 pages to the NDNP by documenting and digitizing select Arizona newspaper titles from this vital time in history in preparation for global online access at Arizona Digital Newspaper Program (ADNP) the Library of Congress’ Chronicling America website. This site is freely available to Internet users everywhere.
Importance of the Project
The years in question are central to the development and identity of Arizona. Many significant historical events between 1880 and 1922 had an enormous impact on the state. In fact, it could be argued that those years represent the period when the era of Arizona’s "Five C's" – copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, climate – began to emerge. When it did, according to historian Thomas Sheridan,"…every aspect of Arizona society – business, labor, ethnic relations, the scale of production – became subordinate to an extractive economy whose markets and centers of power lay far beyond the borders of Arizona itself." (Thomas E. Sheridan, Arizona: A History. Tucson: The University of Arizona Press, 1994, p. 103).
Selected Newspapers
An Advisory Board made up of historians, archivists, librarians, and academics, who after an arduous process, chose the 10 titles. The selection criteria had many requirements, some of which were based on how well the newspaper represented all of Arizona’s geographical, population, tribal and cultural areas between the years of 1859 and 1922.
