Navajo County
Navajo County was established March 21, 1895, as Arizona's twelfth county.
It was formed out of the western portion of Apache County. The county seat
is located in Holbrook.
SG 1. Assessor

SG 3. Coroner
Inquests and verdicts. 1915-1970. Fraction c.f.
(1 folder and 2 rolls of microfilm).
Records include jury verdicts for 1915, 1923 and 1927, giving cause of
death. Verdicts were signed by each jury member. Coroner's inquests, 1915-1970,
are filed alphabetically. Some of these records are Reporters' transcripts.
SG 4. Justice of the Peace
Cases. 1895-1902 and 1925. Fraction c.f. (5 folders).
Records include five cases, 1895-1902, and one folder of affidavits of seizure
of strayed cattle, 1925.
SG 5. Recorder
Great Registers. 1895-1942. 5.1 c.f. (17 volumes).
There are a number of general registers, 1912-1932. A list of qualified voters,
1942, was taken from voters' registration for the election of November
3, 1942.
Appointments. 1895-1947. 1 c.f. (1 box and 2 volumes).
Records note appointments to various county offices; appointments cancelled,
1895-1923; bonds cancelled and official bonds, 1908-1918, some for 1894-1898
for Sheriff's office; notarial records, 1914-1917 and 1944-1947; and fees,
1944-1947, for notarizing various instruments presented to the Recorder.
SG 7. Superintendent of Schools
Winslow student locator cards. 1891-1932. Fraction

Cards are filed alphabetically by student name, later by school districts,
but are not complete for every student.
Snowflake teachers' registers. 1891-1950. Fraction c.f.
(1 roll of microfilm).
Records include a territorial elementary school register, beginning while
this area was Apache County (changed to Navajo County in 1895). It is an
attendance record, not in alphabetical order. The title of the record changes
to state school register and record of attendance and scholarships. Also
included are reports for Snowflake Union High School, 1908-1924.
Holbrook school census reports. 1908-1915. Fraction c.f.

The reports are filed chronologically, then by district number.
Indian attendance reports. 1939. Fraction c.f. (1 roll of
microfilm).
Reports are "Teachers' report of attendance of Indian pupils in public
schools," 1939-1940, for the White Mountain Apache Tribe School. This
report was made to the U.S. Department of Interior, Office of Indian Affairs.
Reports are filed chronologically and then by district number.
SG 8. Superior Court
Clerk of the Court. 1895-1982. 11.8 c.f. (3 boxes,

Records include jury books, 1896-1943; judgment dockets, 1895-1928; Grand
Jury subpoenas, 1912; compensation for witnesses and judges, 1910-1918; jury
records and summons, 1910-1913; court orders for destruction of intoxicating
liquors, 1914-1930; official canvass of general election returns, 1928; and
civil and criminal minutes, 1895-1918, of the 4th Judicial District Court.
There is an official canvass of general election returns, 1928, which consists
of tally sheets and an order declaring James J. Shumway as the duly elected
Representative. Also included are a writ of Mandamus, 1914, and Grand Jury
subpoenas, 1912-1914. The fees are listed by civil cases, notarial bonds
and commissions recorded, marriage licenses issued and jurat's.

Records include marriage affidavits, 1895-1917; marriage
licenses and certificates, 1895-1970; minutes, 1916-1982; dockets, 1919-1954;
registers of action and feebooks, 1895-1930; and case files, 1895-1929. Marriage
licenses and certificates, 1895-1970, are filed chronologically.
The registers of action and feebooks, 1895-1930, are filed numerically and
marked if indexed. District Court civil cases, 1895-1930, are filed by case
number.
Criminal Division. 1895-1984. 3 c.f. (3 volumes and 156

Records include registers of actions, 1895-1933, and case files, 1895-1984.
Both records are arranged chronologically.
Probate Division. 1895-1984. 13 c.f. (5 boxes, 17
volumes, 2 folders and 33 rolls of microfilm)
Records include an estate register, 1912; insanity cases, 1901-1929; minutes,
1895-1912 and 1944-1984; wills, 1895-1918; administrators and guardian bonds
and letters, 1891-1918; dockets, 1918-1954; feebooks, 1895-1928; case files,
1909-1929 and 1939-1960; and naturalization records, 1897-1945, including
declarations of intent, 1897-1929, and petitions and correspondence, 1909-1945.
Probate insanity cases, 1901-1929, are filed by case number. Cases are listed
through 1929, and additions have been made to 1930-1931 and 1958-1959.
Probate Court minute books, 1889 and 1895-1911, begin with an index. The
minutes consist of proceedings. The Probate Court feebook, 1896-1918, is
indexed.
Also included is correspondence between clerk and applicants for naturalization,
1909-1945, and an index of declarations of naturalization.
Administrator's bonds, 1891-1918, include bonds of the administrator of the
estate of deceased individuals. Guardian bonds, 1895-1917, list name of person
appointed as guardian. Administrator and guardian letters include appointments
and oaths.
