Santa Cruz County


The Twentieth Legislature created Santa Cruz County on March 15, 1899 from a southeastern part of Pima County.  It was named after the Santa Cruz River which meanders through this county.  The county seat is Nogales.


SG 1.  Assessor
Assessment and tax rolls.  1899-1957.  34.2 c.f.  (114 volumes).
Volumes are assessment lists, 1915-1930; City of Nogales original and duplicate assessment rolls, 1908-1916; personal property assessment lists, 1920-1934, 1947, and 1950; conditional sales contracts, 1919-1926; and Assessor's cashbooks, 1925-1945.


SG 4.  Justice of the Peace
Court records.  1885-1964.  4.3 c.f.  (4 boxes and 1 volume)
Court records include complaints, 1885-1910; criminal complaints, petty larceny and criminal libel records, 1885-1900; and summons, writs of attachment and arrest warrants, 1893-1899.  Other records include criminal dockets, arranged chronologically, 1911-1919; Justice Court criminal complaints for commitment, 1907-1938; and bonds, contracts, agreements, correspondence, bids, warrants, complaints and jurors' certificates, 1922-1964.


SG 5.  Recorder
Elections.  1902-1975.  14.4 c.f.  (4 boxes and 38 volumes)
Election records include great registers, 1902-1910 and 1912-1932, and Nogales, 1955-1969.  Corrections and additions are at the end of each year in supplements.  Other election records include results, tally lists, official and unofficial returns, 1948; records of primary and general signature rosters, 1956, 1960, and 1972; special levy school district election official returns, 1973; and official returns for a special bond election, District 35, 1975, showing vote tallies for and against the issue by party and precinct.  Also included are precinct registers and signature roster, 1965 and 1972.
Index to appointments.  1902-1914.  Fraction c.f.  (1 volume).
This volume is an alphabetical index of appointments of agents of corporations.
Mining locations.  1912-1922.  Fraction c.f.  (1 volume).
This volume gives mining claim numbers and descriptions of mine boundaries.
Block and subdivision additions.  1920-1929.  Fraction c.f.  (1 volume).
This volume lists changes in blocks and subdivisions.


SG 6.  Sheriff
Prison register.  1923-1927.  Fraction c.f.  (1 volume).
This volume is a County jail register, arranged chronologically, February 1923-November 1927.
Register of actions.  1924.  Fraction c.f.  (1 volume).
The register of actions, February-August 1924, is indexed.


SG 7.  Superintendent of Schools
Teachers' registers.  1907-1950.  Fraction c.f.  (6 rolls of microfilm).
Accounts and appointments.  1899-1934.  Fraction c.f.  (1 volume).
Annual school reports.  1910-1934.  1 c.f.  (1 box).


SG 8.  Superior Court
Clerk of the Court.  1899-1964.  3.5 c.f.  (2 boxes and 5 volumes).
Clerk's records include minutes of the Court, 1911-1915; First District Court register of actions and fees, 1899-1905, indexed by plaintiff; register of actions and fees, 1899-1912, arranged chronologically; and a Clerk's cashbook, 1949-1954.
Minutes of the Court, 1911-1915, are filed chronologically.  The registers of actions and fees, 1899-1905 and 1899-1912, are arranged by case number.  The Clerk's cashbook, 1949-1954, is arranged chronologically.
Civil Division.  1928-1930 and 1966.  1.2 c.f.  (4 volumes).
Civil records are four exhibits from cases Marriage licenses 1899-1968.
Probate Division.  1899-1943.  Fraction c.f.  (1 box and 2 volumes).
Probate records include a record of wills, 1899-1943, arranged chronologically and indexed; register of claims, 1899-1903, arranged chronologically and indexed; and certificates of transfer of estates and guardianships, 1899-1900.


SG 9.  Board of Supervisors
Minutes.  1902-1964.  3.2 c.f.  (2 boxes and 4 volumes).
Minutes, 1902-1926 and 1907-1938, include election notices, public official bonds, Board resolutions and agreements, bids, contracts, proposals, candidate expenses and nomination papers.  They also include one box of unarranged bids, bonds, contracts, agreements and correspondence, 1915-1964, which include some Justice Court warrants and complaints.


SG 11.  Treasurer
Taxes.  1899-1977.  21.6 c.f.  (72 volumes).
Tax records include back tax books, 1899-1934, arranged alphabetically by name of taxpayer; record of accounts with school districts, 1899-1904, arranged chronologically and indexed; and journals, 1899-1907, 1906-1917, 1918-1922 and 1927-1948.  Other records include property sold for taxes, 1899-1902, arranged by transaction number; record of bonded indebtedness, 1899-1956; Tax Collectors' cashbook, 1905-1928; and account ledgers, 1899-1967.  Also included are first and second installments on state/county/city taxes, 1933-1935, arranged alphabetically by taxpayers; Treasurer's monthly financial reports, 1958-1977; and a growers' ledger, 1927-1929, in Spanish, arranged alphabetically by name of individual taxpayer.


SG 13.  Works Progress Administration
Correspondence.  1931-1938.  Fraction c.f.  (1 item).
Correspondence includes telegrams, receipts, veterans' newsletter and project proposals.
