Yavapai County
Yavapai County was the first county created by the Territorial Legislature
in 1864. It was named after the Yavapai Indians. The county seat
is Prescott.
SG 1. Assessor
Assessment and tax rolls. 1879-1959. 67.5

Records include a tax roll, 1879-1881, for School District One,
for the Prescott area. Other records include assessment and tax rolls,
1919-1959; property assessment lot cash books, 1905-1935; original and duplicate

Inquests include witness statements, subpoenas, verdicts and jury proceedings,

SG 4. Justice of the Peace
Proceedings. 1874-1884 and 1927-1932. Fraction

Records include proceedings for Mayer precinct, 1927-1932; a proceedings
book for criminal cases in the Prescott precinct, 1874-1884; and a civil
proceedings book, 1874-1884, that does not give a precinct.
Administrative records. 1879 and 1946-1954. Fraction

Records include statements of claims, 1879, which show financial claims against
the Court. Notary Public acknowledgments, 1946-1954, are arranged
chronologically and numerically.
Docket books. 1865-1965. 9.9 c.f. (33

Docket books are for individual precincts and include a docket listing marriage certificates,
actions for damages, estrery notices and case proceedings for the Walnut
Creek precinct, July 21, 1875-February 12, 1893; a criminal and civil
docket including murder cases, complaints, theft and disorderly conduct
cases, 1865-1870; and a civil docket, 1878-1881, listing attachments and
cases of indebtedness for the Prescott precinct.

Records include great registers, 1882-1915; election returns for delegates
to Congress and statehood, 1906; and affidavits, 1902-1905.
Bonds and affidavits. 1871-1931. Fraction c.f. (1

Records include bonds for individuals and mining properties, 1874-1900;
agreements, 1871-1879 and 1892-1894; affidavits of owners of transient livestock,
1929-1931; a lease for billiard tables, 1917; contracts with private corporations;
and township plats, 1883 and 1904. There is also an index of names,
1926.

Records include the first and refunding mortgage of the Arizona Power Corporation,
1935; writs of attachment, 1907-1911; foreclosures, 1940-1964; Sheriff's
certificates of sale, 1889-1959, and of redemption, 1911-1959; claims of
lien, 1907 and 1911; mortgages, 1935-1941; and laborers' liens, 1907.

School census marshals' reports. 1895-1927. 5

Records include teacher registers and reports, 1874-1965. Originals
date from 1874-1938, 1944-1953, 1956-1958, 1961-1965, and on microfilm, 1900-1949. Not
all years are available for all school districts. A register
of school warrants, 1909-1919, is arranged by date. School records
of election, 1910-1911, contain election notices and appointments of School
Trustees and School Census Marshall. Agreements, 1879-1899, consist
of contracts signed by teachers. Also included are appointments of
District Clerks and Trustees; teacher certificates, 1882-1912; teacher contracts,
1881-1916; correspondence, 1879-1911; deed for school district #28,
1901; and the District Clerk annual reports, 1910-1914.
Board of Trustees' records. 1870-1920. 1 c.f. (1

Trustee annual reports contain financial records of disbursements by school district
and list some school boundaries.

Clerk of the Court. 1864-1965. 9.9

Clerk's records include tax suits, 1927-1936; judgment books, 1866-1930;
register of dental certificates, 1900-1910; index to juvenile cases, 1910-1919;
index to Pioneer's Home, 1913-1930; jury books, 1869-1939; notarial commissions
and bonds, 1901-1937; minutes, 1868-1878 and 1891-1930; and court calendars,
1864-1933. Jury books, 1869-1939, include an account of fees of jurors.
Notarial Commission bond records, 1901-1937, include appointments and oaths
of notary publics and names of individuals and companies holding bonds. Minutes
of the U.S. District Court, 1868-1878 and 1891-1930, include continuances
of cases, names of jurists, indictments, requests of defendants, orders and
verdicts. Court calendars, 1864-1933, are listed by civil, criminal
and probate divisions. Probate calendars of estate or guardianship
are arranged alphabetically.
Records also include writs of attachment, 1942-1965; special executions,
1950-1964; judgments, 1908; lis pendens, 1931, 1955, 1958, 1964-1965;
and complaints, garnishments, bankruptcy and summons, 1919, 1925, 1933-1934,
and 1936.

Records include civil cases, 1865-1920, filed numerically; a civil case proceedings
volume, 1874-1884; an index to civil actions, 1864-1940, arranged alphabetically
by both plaintiff and defendants' names; and registers of actions and cast
books, 1865-1930.
Marriage licenses and certificates, 1870-1972, are arranged chronologically. Marriage affidavits,
1925-1969, are applications for marriage licenses. Indices to
marriage licenses are listed alphabetically by name of females and males,
and include book and page number.
Civil and probate cases, 1864-1949, are arranged chronologically by
case number.
Criminal Division. 1865-1965. Fraction c.f. (25

Criminal records include criminal registers, 1884-1931, and a proceedings
index lists cases alphabetically by defendants' names. Criminal records
also include cases, 1865-1903, unnumbered and filed alphabetically by year. Other
cases, 1886-1910, are listed by number.

Probate records include records of claims, 1875-1952, with an alphabetical
index; Probate Court calendars, 1883-1933, indexed by name; minutes, 1864-1930,
including hearings, orders and decrees regarding guardianship and the estates
of deceased individuals; letters and bonds, 1892-1931; and insanity dockets,
1872-1955, indexed alphabetically.
SG 9. Board of Supervisors

This volume lists bonds approved by the Board. Also included are
Sheriff's financial records, assessment roll figures and funds received by
the Board.

These volumes contain road bonds and county redemption fund bonds.
Warrant register. 1873-1875. Fraction c.f. (1

This register contains general fund information filed chronologically.
Correspondence. 1897-1911. 5.5 c.f. (16

Correspondence includes letters from both business and individuals. Letter
books are outgoing correspondence, 1897-1911, arranged chronologically.

Records include fees collected, 1899, arranged alphabetically; Tax Collectors'
cashbooks, 1917-1937, arranged alphabetically by name of taxpayer; delinquent
tax records, 1885-1897 and 1905-1928; tax rolls, 1882-1885, for
school districts; and a back tax book, 1927-1928.
Records also include a record of property sold for delinquent taxes, 1887-1903;
state and county taxes, 1907-1921; tax suits, 1916-1933; taxes paid
under protest, 1926-1936; and an unsecured personal property tax roll,
1932-1946, arranged chronologically by year of assessment.

Volumes include school fund cashbooks, 1926-1927; a receipt book, 1884-1916;
and cashbooks, 1865-1937.
Warrants. 1879-1979. 6.1 c.f. (5 boxes

Warrants include expense fund, general, salary, contingent, road expense
fund warrants, claims audited and orders for payment. Warrant registers,
1887, 1899, 1912, 1936, include bank statements, 1971-1973; court orders,
1961-1973; annual statements of receipts and expenditures for the Chino Valley Irrigation District,
1962-1969; registered warrants held in Public Works Reserve Fund, 1970-1973;
and sworn statements from the Board of Supervisors attesting to amount of
money in the County Treasury, 1962-1973. Other items include ledger
sheets for school districts, 1969-1979, and county school funds,
1927-1932.
