Arizona State Agency Publications and Records

About Arizona Publications produced by Arizona territorial and state agencies have been collected by the Library since territorial times. The annual reports of Arizona state agencies make up a large part of the collection and are a unique source of Arizona history. Publications in the collection cover a wide variety of subjects including agriculture, mining, transportation, economics, education and government. This collection is in closed stacks and to request the retrieval of specific items, you will need to contact a reference librarian at the Research Reference Desk on the third floor in Suite 300. Also, Arizona territorial and state agencies have been compiling records throughout the years and some records of historical interest have been published in the form of directories or have been turned over to the History and Archives Division for preservation. Some agencies have made more recent records available in a searchable database format. For more information, select:

Finding Arizona State Agency Publications
Arizona State Agency Publications are arranged according to the Arizona Documents (AZDocs) Classification System which organizes materials by issuing agency. For example:

AZDocs Class Arizona State Agency
AGR Arizona Department of Agriculture
COM Department of Commerce
COR State Department of Corrections
EDD Department of Education
GF Game and Fish Department
GV Office of the Governor
HES Department of Health Services
LG Legislature
REV Department of Revenue
SC Supreme Court

As the government is periodically reorganized, agency names change and responsibilities are transferred to new agencies. As a result, it is possible for reports to change, be discontinued or receive a different classification over time.

The Library and Archives' online catalog may be searched for specific publications, or, to browse a class of records, select "Advanced Catalog Search >>" then "Call Number Browse" from "Library Catalog Searches."  Once the screen comes up, enter and AZDocs Class in the "Call Number" box, select "AZDOCS" from the "Shelving Scheme" options and select "Research Library" from the " Library" options. It is possible to see state ageny publications that have been recently cataloged by selecting "Advanced Catalog Search >>" and then, when the new screen comes up, selecting "New State Documents" from the "New in the Last 90 Days" box.

Genealogy in Arizona State Agency Publications
Arizona State Agency Publications might be of interest to those with Arizona ancestors since the names of those licensed to practice medicine or sell real estate can be found in the collection.  Brand owners and brands can be found in the brand books.  The names, addresses and salaries of early teachers can be found in the early education directories.  The names of miners killed or injured in mining accidents during early statehood can be found in the annual reports of the State Mine Inspector. SOME of these resources have been indexed in the Arizona History and Archives Division's Biographical Index. And a FEW of the resources are available online through the Arizona Memory Project.
